How to Join

The most common way that men find their way to the lodge is through a personal friend or acquiantance. If you know a Freemason, you should ask him about the fraternity and ask for information to join.

Some people mistakenly think that Freemasonry is an invitation only group. The is exactly the opposite! If you wish you join, you must ask! If you are waiting for someone to invite you to join, you will most likely be waiting for a long time. It is tradition within the Brotherhood that you must ask to join of your own free will. In most cases, it is frowned upon for anyone to “recruit” others into the Brotherhood. This being said, if you know any Freemasons, tell them you are interested in joining.

Many men live a lifetime and never know that they must ask for admission to the world’s oldest, most purposeful and greatest fraternity. They do not realize that they will not be invited. They must come of their own free will and accord without persuasion. They must ask a Mason for a petition for membership.

To become a Freemason in New York State, you must:

  • Be a man at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good moral character
  • Believe in a Supreme Being
  • Be loyal to your country
  • Be dedicated to providing for your family
  • Have a sincere determination to conduct yourself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others
  • Possess a desire to help others through community service and universal benevolence
  • The (modest) fees and dues must not become a burden to yourself or family

There are NO religious, political or racial restrictions for Masonic membership other than the aforementioned belief in a Supreme Being. Any discussion of religion or politics is strictly forbidden in a Masonic Lodge.

If you do not know any Freemasons, you can contact our lodge secretary. He will tell you about the lodge and Freemasonry in general.

Either way, you will be provided a petition to join the lodge. Once you fill out the petition and return it, you will be contacted by members of the lodge for an interview. The interview is informal and is usually performed at your house. If you are in a relationship, it is preferable that your significant other be present.

The interview will consist of you being asked some fairly basic questions to make sure that you meet the necessary criteria to join. You’ll also be given more in depth information about Freemasonry. This will also be a chance for you and your significant other to ask any questions you have about us or how we operate.

Once the interview is concluded, you’ll be informed within a few weeks  as to whether you have been accepted and what to do next.
